RYO KATO
NIIMI (JAPAN), 1978

Born in 1978 in Niimi, Okayama Prefecture, Japan, Ryo Kato lives and works between Germany and Japan. After an early career as a professional Go player, he chose to devote himself entirely to art, moving first to Paris and later to Berlin, where he studied at the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste) under Wolfgang Petrick and completed his studies as a Meisterschüler of Daniel Richter. Today, his work is exhibited regularly in both Europe and Japan.
Ryo Kato's artistic practice explores pressing contemporary issues, including the environmental crisis, the relationship between humanity and nature, consumerism, conflict, and social transformation. His paintings are built through a complex layering of figurative and abstract elements, where landscapes, animals, human figures, and symbolic imagery coexist in rich, dynamic compositions.
His distinctive visual language is characterized by vibrant colour, expressive brushwork, and a compelling balance between realism and abstraction. Beyond their striking visual impact, Kato's works invite viewers to reflect critically on the challenges of our time. Drawing on both Japanese cultural heritage and his artistic experience in Europe, he has developed a highly personal painterly language in which the strategic discipline acquired through the game of Go merges with a free and expressive gesture, transforming each painting into a powerful visual narrative about the future of humanity and the natural world
